Soil analysis is a tool that has been employed with the primary goal of providing recommendations for soil rectification, crop productivity and/or soil health management. Conventional methods Diethylene Triamine Penta Acetic Acid and ammonium acetate extraction are commonly used for analysis of bioavailable nutrients. However, there are limitations to these methods as both extraction fluids are buffered to neutral or near-neutral pH.Hence extracted nutrients represent a “potential or ideal-case” fertility status of soil instead of an “actual” field status.
pH is called the master variable in the soil which means it is THE controlling factor as far as nutrient solubility and plant availability of nutrients in the soil is concerned. Ionic activity (supply of nutrients to roots) as well as the “cation and anion ionic capacity” (the release of nutrient ions from a fixed form to available form) are both pH dependent.
Hence, the validity and agronomic dependence on the pH chart. With the exception of phosphorus, which has a small available pH range, macronutrients (N, K, Ca, Mg, and S) are more available within a pH range of 6.5 to 8, while the majority of micronutrients (B, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Zn) are more available within a pH range of 5 to 7. This trend should reflect in all soil audits and hence at IMTTL we have adopted a modified method in which the extraction fluid is buffered to actual soil pH to get a REALISTIC soil-audit of the available nutrients in the soil.
